Transmontano Mastiff
Massive. Calm. Always on guard.
The Transmontano Mastiff is the largest of the Portuguese breeds.
Despite its size it is docile and calm, though reserved with strangers.
Quick Snapshot
Where They Come From
It comes from Trás-os-Montes, where it guarded sheep and goats from wolves on steep highland pastures.
The FCI accepted it only in 2020, and on a provisional basis.
Daily Reality
- Needs plenty of space and a territory to watch
- Calm at home, quick to react to threats
- Works best alongside other dogs
Its size makes early socialisation and handling essential.
Who This Breed Suits
- Farms and livestock keepers.
- Owners experienced with large guardian breeds.
- Rural homes with secure fencing.
Not ideal for apartments, small gardens or first-time owners.
Health Considerations
May be predisposed to:
- Generally healthy
- Hip dysplasia
- Gastric torsion (bloat)
As with all giant breeds, controlled growth and hip screening make a difference.
