Where They Come From
An ancient Japanese breed that hunted birds and small game in the mountains facing the Sea of Japan.
It nearly vanished in the 20th century, and was rebuilt from a few regional lines.
Daily Reality
- Needs daily walks and mental play
- Strong prey drive, so recall can be unreliable
- Sheds heavily twice a year
Keep it on a lead or in a secure garden; a Shiba follows its nose first.
Who This Breed Suits
- Experienced, patient owners.
- Calm homes, including apartments.
- People who respect an independent dog.
Not ideal for first-time owners who expect instant obedience.
Health Considerations
May be predisposed to:
- Luxating patella
- Glaucoma
- Allergies (atopic dermatitis)
Regular eye and joint checks help catch problems early.
Did you know?
The Shiba nearly disappeared in the 20th century; today's dogs descend mainly from three regional lines.
Earn its trust, and a Shiba will be loyal for life.
