    Portuguese Water Dog

    Athletic. Clever. Born at sea.

The Portuguese Water Dog worked on Algarve fishing boats for centuries.

Today it needs that same energy at home.

    Where They Come From

From the Algarve, where fishermen used it to carry messages between boats and retrieve nets and gear.

Nearly extinct in the 1930s, it was saved by Vasco Bensaúde.

    Daily Reality

    • Needs daily exercise and, ideally, swimming
    • Coat grows constantly and sheds little
    • Learns fast and needs mental work

Regular grooming keeps the curly or wavy coat healthy.

    Who This Breed Suits

    • Active families.
    • Owners near water or beaches.
    • People with mild dog allergies.

Not ideal for sedentary homes or long hours alone.

    Health Considerations

    May be predisposed to:

    • Hip dysplasia
    • Progressive retinal atrophy
    • Addison's disease

Ask breeders for parents' eye and hip tests.
