    Gentle. Noble. Larger than life.

The Great Dane is one of the tallest dog breeds in the world.

Behind the imposing size is a friendly, easygoing companion.

    Where They Come From

Descends from medieval German hounds used to hunt wild boar, bears and deer.

In 1878 a committee in Berlin grouped its varieties under one name, Deutsche Dogge.

    Daily Reality

    • Needs moderate daily walks, not marathons
    • Takes up a lot of sofa and car space
    • Growing puppies need gentle, controlled exercise

Early training matters, because a pulling adult weighs as much as a person.

    Who This Breed Suits

    • Calm households with space.
    • Owners ready for a giant-sized budget.
    • Families with older, steady children.

Not ideal for small flats, lots of stairs or owners who cannot handle a very strong dog.

    Health Considerations

    May be predisposed to:

    • Bloat (gastric torsion)
    • Dilated cardiomyopathy
    • Hip dysplasia

Smaller meals, rest after eating and a talk with your vet about preventive gastropexy make a real difference.

    Did you know?

A Great Dane called Zeus measured 111.8 cm at the shoulder, the tallest dog Guinness World Records has ever measured.

Plenty of dog, and every bit of it is heart.
