Serious. Loyal. Made for the mountains.
The Castro Laboreiro Dog is one of the oldest breeds of the Iberian Peninsula.

Quick Snapshot
Where They Come From
It is named after the village of Castro Laboreiro, in the mountains of Melgaço in the far north of Portugal.
It was kept to protect flocks from wolves, a role it still plays in its homeland.
Daily Reality
- Needs daily walks and room to patrol
- Wary of strangers, without being quarrelsome
- Has a loud, distinctive alarm bark
Short coat, easy care: a weekly brush is usually enough.
Who This Breed Suits
- Experienced owners.
- Homes with land or a large fenced garden.
- Rural and mountain settings.
Not ideal for apartments or homes where barking is a problem.
Health Considerations
May be predisposed to:
- Generally healthy
- Hip dysplasia
- Elbow dysplasia
The population is small, so choose a breeder who health-tests the parents.
Did you know?
Its alarm bark starts deep and ends in long, high-pitched notes, almost like a howl.
Earn its trust, and you will have a guardian for life.
