Quick Snapshot
Where They Come From
A farm dog from the Swiss canton of Bern, used to guard, herd cattle and pull carts of milk and cheese.
First known as the Dürrbächler, after the hamlet of Dürrbach, it got its first breed club in 1907.
Daily Reality
- Needs daily walks, ideally in cool weather
- Sheds a lot, especially twice a year
- Enjoys carting and pulling games
Brushing a few times a week keeps the thick coat in good shape.
Who This Breed Suits
- Families with children.
- Homes with a garden and cooler climate.
- Owners who are around most of the day.
Not ideal for hot flats or owners who are away for long hours.
Health Considerations
May be predisposed to:
- Histiocytic sarcoma
- Hip and elbow dysplasia
- Bloat (gastric torsion)
Lifespan is shorter than average, often around 8 to 10 years, so health-tested parents and regular check-ups are worth it.
Did you know?
Swiss farmers called them cheese dogs, because they pulled carts of milk and cheese to the dairies.
A big, soft heart, made to share every day with you.
