Where They Come From
It descends from dogs brought to the Azores by settlers from the 15th century, used to herd cattle on Terceira.
The Portuguese Kennel Club recognised it in 2004; it is not yet recognised by the FCI.
Daily Reality
- Needs at least an hour of activity daily
- Long, wavy coat needs brushing several times a week
- Alert and protective of home and family
It bonds closely and does not like being left alone for long.
Who This Breed Suits
- Active families.
- Homes with a garden.
- Owners who enjoy training and herding sports.
Not ideal for apartments or owners who are away most of the day.
Health Considerations
May be predisposed to:
- Generally healthy
- Hip dysplasia
- MDR1 drug sensitivity
Little data exists for this rare breed; hip screening and a DNA test are sensible.
Did you know?
A 2005 census counted only 222 Barbados da Terceira.
A rare island treasure that wants to be part of everything you do.
